Europe’s Battery Storage Boom Accelerates as 2026 Installations Set to Jump 78% YoY
EUPD Research’s latest Electrical Energy Storage (EES) Report© forecasts Europe’s battery storage market will reach 57 GWh in 2026, with Germany, Bulgaria, Italy, the United Kingdom (UK) and Spain leading a new phase of deployment.
Bonn, Germany: Europe’s battery storage market is entering its most transformative year yet, with annual installations forecast to rise from 32 GWh in 2025 to 57 GWh in 2026, a 78% year-on-year increase, according to EUPD Research’s latest EES Report© Europe H1 2026.
The milestone signals a fundamental shift in Europe’s energy transition, as battery storage becomes critical infrastructure for renewable integration, grid flexibility and electrification across residential, commercial and utility-scale markets.
Record Growth Reshapes Europe’s Storage Market
Germany, Bulgaria, Italy, the United Kingdom and Spain are expected to lead Europe’s battery storage market in 2026*. Germany and Italy continue to benefit from mature installer ecosystems and established policy frameworks, while the UK and Spain are scaling rapidly through expanding front-of-the-meter pipelines. Bulgaria’s emergence among Europe’s leading markets demonstrates the transformative impact of EU recovery funding, highlighting growing momentum across Central and South-Eastern Europe.
Growth is driven by falling battery costs, rising electricity prices, and increasing adoption of solar-plus-storage systems to maximize self-consumption and reduce energy bills. Commercial and industrial storage is gaining traction as businesses seek to reduce energy costs and optimize on-site generation, while utility-scale deployment is accelerating, supported by improving market opportunities and policy frameworks, despite persistent grid-connection and permitting challenges.
The residential segment remains one of Europe’s strongest growth engines, with installations expected to increase from 11 GWh in 2025 to 15 GWh in 2026, a 36% annual increase. Germany remains the largest residential market, followed by Italy, the Netherlands, the UK and Austria.
Brand Leadership is Being Redefined
Europe’s residential energy storage market remains highly competitive as supplier dynamics continue to evolve.
In 2025, BYD, Huawei, Sungrow and Fox ESS were the leading brands, with BYD and Huawei retaining prominent positions and together accounting for more than 30% of the total share**.
In H1 2026, Fox ESS, Huawei, BYD and Sigenergy formed the top four. The shift highlights Fox ESS and Sigenergy’s rapid growth, while BYD and Huawei maintain strong market positions, underscoring the increasing diversification of the European residential storage market. The narrowing gap among the top four in H1 2026 points to a more balanced competitive landscape, with emerging players gaining share while established leaders experience some moderation in their market positions. Competition is increasingly shifting beyond battery hardware to integrated energy solutions, with brands that combine modular storage systems, intelligent energy management and comprehensive product ecosystems gaining momentum. If current shipment trends continue, Fox ESS and Sigenergy are likely to emerge as Europe’s top two residential energy storage brands by the end of 2026, reflecting the accelerating shift in competitive leadership across the market.
